The information project

The Fredensborg Team has thus far completed the following projects:

A BOOK: The book, The Slave Ship Fredensborg, by Leif Svalesen. Published 2000 by Indiana University Press USA; Ian Randle Publishers, Kingston, Jamaica; Sub-Saharan Publishers, Accra, Ghana; Aschehoug, Norway. Slaveskipet Fredensborg og den dansk-norske slavehandel på 1700-tallet. 1996, Cappelen Fakta, Norway and Hovedland Publishers, Denmark.

A MONUMENT: On 1 December 1996 a stone monument on which was mounted a plaque commemorating the slave ship Fredensborg was unveiled by representatives of Ghana on Tromøy near Arendal, Norway, at the site of the shipwreck.

A TRAVELLING EXHIBITION IN SCANDINAVIA: The Norwegian Maritime Museum has contributed a comprehensive travelling exhibition based on finds from the Fredensborg. The exhibition was enthusiastically received in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. This was later mounted as a permanent exhibition in the Aust-Agder County Museum in Arendal. A smaller exhibition is also located at the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo.

A GRAPHIC NARRATIVE PRESENTATION: The slaver Fredensborg, The final voyage1767-68 by Kurt Aust, Leif Svalesen and Kin Wessel - a comic strip version for young readers with a factual section - was published in Norwegian and English by C. Huitfeldt Forlag and Norwegian Maritime Museum in 1997. This has been translated into Italian: Gli schiavi della Fredensborg L´ultimo viaggio di una nave negriera (1767-68). Published in Italy by Erickson, 2001.

AN EXHIBITION ON ST. CROIX: A compact, permanent Fredensborg exhibition has been mounted at the Fort Frederik Museum in Frederiksted on St. Croix, with assistance from the St. Croix Landmarks Society. This was Norway´s gift to the 150th Anniversary Emancipation Celebration 3 July 1998.
AN EXHIBITION IN GHANA: An identical exhibition was presented as a gift from Norway to Ghana 16 February 1999. The exhibition is on permanent display at the National Museum in Accra.

PLAQUES AT HISTORICAL SITES: In November 2000, information plaques were mounted at Danish-Norwegian historical sites in Ghana, in cooperation with Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.

UPGRADING OF THE RUINS OF FORT FREDENSBORG: In November 2000, a free-standing billboard with four information panels was unveiled at the Danish-Norwegian Fort Fredensborg site in Old Ningo. In co-operation with Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and the local people in the community, the forts area was cleaned and five of the original cannons, treated to preserve them, were mounted at the entrance.
Members of Fredensborg Team have also been active in other projects connected to UNESCO´s "Slave Route" project and the Danish-Norwegian activities on St. Croix, present U.S. Virgin Islands, in Ghana, Denmark and Norway.
